Enhancing Pelagic Fisheries with REM

Pelagics

Starting in March 2026, Scotland is implementing new Remote Electronic Monitoring (REM) requirements for pelagic vessels, a major step forward in the effort to improve sustainability, transparency, and accountability in the fishing sector.

Under the new regulations, Scottish and non-Scottish RSW, CSW, or freezer systems vessels (12 metres and above) operating within the Scottish EEZ systems must be equipped with onboard REM systems. These systems must include cameras, sensors, and GPS tracking, and must be fully operational for the entire duration of fishing trips. All equipment must meet the technincal specifications outlined by the Scottish Government. Vessels that do not comply with the new regulations or have failed to validate their REM systems before fishing within the Scottish EEZ, will be subject to fines.

This marks a shift towards digital compliance, ensuring accurate documentation of fishing activity while enabling better-informed, data-driven marine policies. It also supports long-term sustainability and reinforces confidence in pelagic fisheries on the international stage.

Implementing REM on Pelagic Vessels

At Anchor Lab, we support our customers through every step — from the first contact to full system installation and final approval by the Scottish Marine Directorate.

Our experience shows that collaborating with the local workforce leads to the most effective outcomes. Typically, the process begins when a marine technician contacts us on behalf of a pelagic vessel. From there, we work in close partnership to deliver a tailored solution and ensure smooth deployment.

A typical collaboration includes:

  • Identifying camera placements that meet REM requirements
  • determine appropriate sensors to integrate to meet the requirements
  • Guiding best practices for hardware installation
  • Supporting software setup and system configuration
  • Creating a vessel-specific support record in our platform
  • Assisting in drafting the Vessel Monitoring Plan (VMP)
  • Providing support through the REM approval process
  • Providing the required cloud platform to the Scottish authorities to review the collected information.

This hands-on, collaborative approach helps ensure the system integrates seamlessly into daily operations without adding unnecessary burden on the crew.

If you're operating in the pelagic sector and looking for a trusted REM solution that supports your goals, contact us today.

A Smarter Way to Monitor

Our REM solution — the BlackBox VX — is a modular, rugged, and fully automated system built for the demanding needs of pelagic fisheries and aligned with all Scottish REM regulations.

  • Proven and Trusted. Deployed on 300+ vessels across Northern Europe, including 100+ in Scotland.
  • Effortless Operation. No interaction required — records only when needed.
  • Powerful Data Capture. HD video synchronized with GPS, winch, and sensor data, all stored securely onboard.
  • Connectivity Built-In. Uploads automatically via Starlink, 4G/5G, or built-in cellular modem.
  • Designed to Fit. Use your vessel’s existing GPS/winch hardware and utlize existing onboard cameras.
  • User Control. Monitor video and sensor data from an onboard interface.
  • Transparency. Fishers access their own trip overviews, just like the authorities can.

BlackBox VX is built to meet today's needs and tomorrow’s innovations. Its future-ready architecture supports AI integration and automated reporting, ensuring lasting value.
